My approach is informed and influenced by principles of: Trauma Therapy, Psychodynamic, Narrative & Post Modern practices, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness.
We learn how to be in relationships in our family of origin. Our Self is formed in relationship with others - parents, siblings, extended family, etc. At the beginning of therapy, I often ask questions about early attachment relationships. Our past relationships inform our present day relationships and so often the information that emerges out of an attachment interview can provide valuable insight and increase our awareness. Did you grow up in an environment that could accommodate your needs some or most of the time? If not, there’s a chance that you unconsciously developed certain coping mechanisms or strategies to get by. Therapy can offer a good opportunity to explore whether or not present day coping mechanisms or ways of being in relationship with others are optimally serving you.
I believe in a strength based approach that puts you at the center of your own therapy. Together we can practice validating your thoughts, emotions, and coping strategies while exploring the consequences and effects of how you are living. Your autonomy and intuition will be supported.
Kindness, humor, compassion, and intellect are principles I value during this process.
